Here's What You Want To See With Your Interior Design Website & SEO
When Someone Types “Interior Designers Near Me” Into Google, You Show Up Here …
Consider how potential clients are searching for interior designers. They’re probably scrolling through Pinterest trying to figure out how to decorate, or they’re spending far too much time on Amazon or Wayfair trying to match their unique style and realize they need the professionals.
They stop scrolling, go to Google, and type in “interior designers near me” – the FIRST thing to show up is the Maps area of Google, this is called the Google Local Pack. The interior designers that show up here “win” and get the most phone calls.
When Someone Types “Best Interior Designers in [City]” Into Google, You Show Up Here …
When potential clients are looking for interior designers, they often use the language of “best interior designer near me” or “best interior designer in [city]”.
Interior designers with the highest ranking in the Maps area for those keywords get the most visitors and phone calls.
When Someone Types Questions Into Google Like “How Should I Decorate My Guest Bedroom” You Show Up Here …
Home and business owners ask a multitude of questions about interior design on Google each day. Questions like …
- “How much does an interior designer cost?”
- “Who is the best interior designer in Portland?”
- “Can an interior designer help me redecorate my condo?”
Ranking for these keywords in Google proves that your website is an “authority” and can be trusted.
People Are Searching Differently For Interior Designers Than They Used To
Just take a look and see the increase in people searching for “interior designer near me” over the last five years.
This screenshot above comes from a tool called Google Trends (a tool created by Google itself). You can see the increase in the number of people searching for “interior designers near me.”

Proof Your Interior Design Firm Needs SEO
You want proof? We’ve got it.
For the sake of proof… let’s assume you’re an interior designer in Austin, TX.
If you’re not located in Austin, this will still be extremely relevant to you. Keep reading!
There are 140 people per month searching for “interior design firms Austin TX” on Google.
And when we go to Google and search for this keyword, what do we see?
We see what’s called the Google Local Pack. Or, as I like to call it, “beachfront real estate on the internet”.
This is where about 30-50% of initial interactions happen. And remember, there are 140 people searching per month.
Of those 140 people per month, roughly 42-70 people are interacting (AKA clicking, calling, visiting websites, etc) for one of the three businesses ranking above.
I’m going to take things even further to prove why SEO matters.People search specifically. There are 40 people per month searching for “commercial interior design Austin”
And the thing is, the results on Google are different for this keyword.
There are dozens of different types of keywords that people are searching on Google. Some general. Others very specific.
- Modern farmhouse interior designer specialty Austin TX
- Retail commercial interior design Austin
- Luxury hotel lobby interior design Austin
- Residential interior design firm Austin Texas
The list goes on and on and on and on.
If you’re not ranking in the Google Local Pack for those types of keywords, you’re missing out.

4Tactical Local Interior Designers SEO Services
Strategy 1: Google Business Profile Optimizations
This is a Google Business Profile.
Why does this matter?
Without a Google Business Profile, it’s literally impossible to rank in the Google Local Pack.
Here’s exactly how Google determines who ranks in the Google Local Pack above. Again, this is according to Google itself.
What does this mean exactly? Let’s break it down:
- Relevance: Word for word, this is what Google says…
- “Relevance refers to how well a local Business Profile matches what someone is searching for. Add complete and detailed business information to help Google better understand your business and match your profile to relevant searches.”
- Distance: where the person is searching from.
- Prominence: how well-known and respected your business is to Google.
- This includes how many Google reviews you have!
As you can see above, I bolded and italicized some of the information.
This is because most interior designers don’t “add complete and detailed business information” to their profile.
- You have 750 characters for your main business description. Use every character!
- You have what are called “custom services” in the back-end of your profile. Add relevant services:
- Commercial interior design
- Tenant improvement design
- Restaurant interior design
- Hotel lobby design
- Images are included in this! So you better have dozens and dozens of SEO-friendly images added to your profile.
SEO Strategy 2: Optimize Your Homepage To Win in Interior Design
I talked a lot about the Google Local Pack above. I mean… I talked A LOT about it.
The good news is that I’m done talking about it (for now).
Below the Google Local Pack, the organic results show up. And for your most important keywords (“interior design firm in [city]”, “residential interior designer [city]”, and “commercial interior designer in [city]”), Google is choosing to rank homepages. See below.
What does this mean for you?
If your homepage isn’t optimized for SEO, you’re not going to rank.
It gets more interesting because most homepages for interior designers are the opposite of SEO-optimized.
Interior designers want to be sleek. I get it.
But this often means having NO content on their homepage other than images.
And this is a massive problem for Google’s crawlers.
Let’s go back to the screenshot directly above. You’ll see that Audrey Scheck is ranking first.
If you go to her homepage, you’ll see that her top section is filled with a beautiful video. Then, when you scroll down, the first thing you see is this…
You see text! And text that includes SEO-friendly keywords!
If your homepage is…
- Short
- Only has images and video
- Doesn’t have any keywords such as “interior design firm”
… then ranking at the top of Google is nearly impossible.
Strategy 3: Add Specialty Pages on Your Website
This one is pretty straightforward.
Create pages by specialty:
- Interior designers for [industry]
- I.e. Someone looking for “interior design firm for assisted living facility”
- [type of style] interior design
- I.e. Someone looking for “interior designer specializing in modern farmhouse”
We’ve done this for our clients. And the results are pretty astounding.
HH Designers is based in New Jersey. But they’re ranking 1st nationwide as you can see below.
The key here is to be as specific as possible.
- Don’t create a page targeting “commercial”.
- Don’t create a page targeting “hospitality”.’
- Don’t create a page targeting “modern style”
Instead…
- Create a page targeting “hotels”
- Create a page targeting “industrial minimalist style”
The best way to validate what Google is rewarding is simply to go to Google and search for the keyword!
If you go to Google and type in “Tuscan style interior designer in Los Angeles”, you’ll see Arch Digest ranking first (duh). But below that, you’ll see two local firms that have created specific pages targeting Tuscan style.
The strategy works! It’s not easy as it takes a lot of work creating all of these pages. But it definitely works.
SEO Strategy 4: Create Ongoing, Valuable, People-First Content That Your Interior Design Clients Would Love
There’s more content to create than is possible in a lifetime.
Over 1,000 people alone are searching every month for “what color rug should I buy with a gray couch”. It’s insane!
If you have commercial clients, you may write content on:
- How to ensuring wayfinding information aligns with the design aesthetic
- How to design a welcome front desk that matches your ideal client experience
If you have residential clients, you may write content on:
- Designing a space that’s great for hosting
- How to transition an indoor space to an outdoor space
- What bathroom colors are trending for 2025
There’s one caveat to all of this that’s critical for you to know:
As a smaller, more boutique interior design firm, you need to create content on specific topics.
- General topics are usually more competitive and are dominated by the large publications.
- Topics like “design trends for 2024” or “how to design a primary bedroom” are un-rankable
- Specific topics are usually less competitive and you have the ability to rank
- Instead of creating a piece of content on “how to design a primary bedroom” you can make it more specific by creating a piece of content on “how to design an industrially modern primary bedroom”
Why do you want to create this content? If someone reads it halfway around the country, are they really going to hire you?
The answer is probably no.
You’re creating this content for the following reason:
The more content you create about interior design related topics → the more Google trusts that you’re an expert → the higher likelihood Google will rank you for local keywords like “best interior designer in [my city]”.
Ultimately you care about leads and revenue, and creating ongoing content will help your site drive more local leads.

Why Is Interior Designers SEO Important?

On the other hand, SEO puts you in front of motivated buyers looking for what you have to offer:

- How big of a city you’re in
- How long your website has been around
- How high your website’s “domain authority” is
- How your current SEO is performing
- And much more
Some of our clients have seen 2x – 3x phone calls and leads within one month after starting their SEO campaign. Other clients don’t see noticeable increases in phone calls for several months.
Think about this, though:
If every business just made a couple of tweaks on their website and started ranking overnight for the HIGHEST value keywords out there, like “best interior designer in New York City” then the internet would go haywire.
